Although interrupted by another heavy shower, the Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia Powered by AWS provided another thrilling finale as Yasser Shahin and Garth Tander took a last gasp victory.
The race was red flagged for nearly 20 minutes as heavy rain lashed Sandown, but it provided a thrilling finish as the usual pit window was altered to fit inside the final moments of the race.
Prince Jefri Ibrahim led heading onto the final lap as all the Pro-Am contenders came out together. First Tony Bates passed the Triple Eight Race Engineering Mercedes-AMG GT3 at Turn 6, then Shahin at Turn 9 as there was more to come.
Hitting a river of water approaching Turn 11, Bates spun his C-Tech Laser Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo II leaving Shahin to win from Ibrahim and Liam Talbot in the Gtechniq entry.
Shane van Gisbergen started from pole and remarkably held on to a tank slapper entering Turn 1 as the conditions continued to worsen.
This was no more evident than when van Gisbergen entered Turn 6 loose, as did Tander, Ross and David Reynolds, but the latter spun as did early challenger to the Pro-Am entries Paul Stokell in the KFC Audi he shares with Garry Higgon.
Prior to this, the safety car was required when the two Am Class Mercedes entries of RAM Motorsport and Harrolds Volante Rosso Racing collided at Turn 11. Walden in the former needed to be extricated from the sand trap.
Rain continued to pelt down and was halted as the rain subsided ensuring a rapid conclusion to the race. The Pro drivers were still driving when the race restarted with 12-minutes remaining and pit stops were made with half of the time left.
In the end, Talbot snatched second on the line from Ibrahim as bates recovered to finish fourth in class.
Matt Stoupas took victory from KFC teammates Higgon and Stokell in Am, as Marc Cini completed an Audi clean-sweep.
Declan Fraser and Mark Griffith took the win in GT4 as the KTM XBow GT2 of David Crampton and Trent Harrison completed the race in Invitational.
The Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia Powered by AWS enters endurance mode when it returns at The Bend Motorsport Park on October 21-23.
