The Fanatec GT World Challenge Asia Powered by AWS season concluded last weekend at Okayama where Triple Eight Race Engineering added to its extensive trophy cabinet.
Although missing out on the outright title through its driver pairing of Prince Jefri Ibrahim and Nick Foster, the duo did take the Pro-Am title as combined with Prince Abu Baker Ibrahim and Jazeman Jaafar, Triple Eight Race Engineering scored the Teams’ Championship.
It was a battle until the end for Ibrahim and Foster as entering the final race the margin was extremely tight to the Car Guy Racing Ferrari 488 GT3.
Foster was in for the opening stint and an incident occurred with title implications when the Triple Eight Race Engineering Mercedes-AMG GT3 contacted chief rival Car Guy Racing’s Ferrari on the opening lap.
The resulting spin dropped the Ferrari of Japanese pair Kei Cozzolino and Takeshi Kimura a lap, while a 100s stop-go penalty was given to Foster, which he took immediately.
Foster emerged behind the Ferrari, but both were outside the points as the Triple Eight squad still needed three-points to draw level with the Car Guy pairing.
Despite Ibrahim continuing his Sandown form where he rose from sixth to second during the opening race two weekends ago, he was unable to complete a pass and finished 13th.
The second Triple Eight Mercedes finished fourth and sixth in the two races to ensure the Teams’ Championship went the way of the Australian squad.
A consolation for Ibrahim and Foster was the Pro-Am Cup win.
AMAC Motorsport pairing Andrew Macpherson and Ben Porter were also victorious after dominating the Am Cup in their Porsche 991 GT3-R by 33-points from the Japanese Team Uematsu pairing of Yudai Uchida and Tadao Uematsu in a McLaren 720S GT3.
The next round for Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia Powered by AWS is a three-hour endurance event at The Bend Motorsport Park as part of the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships on October 21-23.
