Andrew Macpherson and the Amac Team’s winning journey in Asia and Australia
New South Wales-based driver and team owner of Amac Motorsport, Andrew Macpherson is a rarity within the GT World Challenge Australia field.
Previous to this year’s campaign, ‘Amac’ focused his energies on the sister GT World Challenge Asia Series where he and regular co-driver Ben Porter took GT3 Am honours in what was the pair’s second campaign in 2019.
Racing the AMAC Motorsport Lamborghini Huracan at circuits including Sepang, Suzuka, Shanghai and Fuji are all highlights for Macpherson after he began devoting more time in Asia in 2018. In that year Macpherson and Porter took second in the Am standings.
Macpherson and his operation share the distinction of being just one of two teams to compete in both GT World Challenge Asia and Australia, with the other being Triple Eight Race Engineering.
“I’ve been racing Australian GT since 2008, so we’ve done a lot of local racing including Bathurst 25-26 time as well as the Grand Prix, but it doesn’t compare to racing in Asia,” said Macpherson.
“I’ve racing in Asia since 2010. We did the Sepang 12 Hours with David Wall in the Mosler and we went back quite a few times to do that race.
“We had the best times of our lives.”
Although keen to return to Asian competition, ‘Amac’ this season took up the challenge to race in the inaugural GT World Challenge Australia where after three rounds he and Porter sit atop the GT Championship Am standings, five-points ahead of Tony Quinn.
Porter’s partnership with Macpherson is a long one after competing previously in Formula Vee, but he is just one to be provided an opportunity by AMAC Motorsport.
“We go into racing as a team together,” said Macpherson “Before Ben it was Brad Shiels, while we’ve had Matty Campbell on our team where he entered his first international race at Bathurst with us.
Also highlighted by Macpherson is the friendly atmosphere surrounding his team at the race track, one he can’t back to return to.
“Us as a team are a close-knit family so we go to racing not only to race, but to have fun,” he said.
The next round of the Fanatec GT World Challenge Powered by AWS will be held at The Bend Motorsport Park on October 15-17.
