Tander and Shahin claim victory in hard fought Race 2

Garth Tander and Yasser Shahin crossed the line first in the second Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia Powered by AWS race at The Bend, although their win is subject to a potential post-race penalty.

The Audi pair controlled the second hour-long race of the weekend, their victory set up when Tander passed early leader Brenton Grove (Porsche) on Lap 12.

He quickly gapped the likes of Grove, Broc Feeney and O’Keeffe before pitting on Lap 16 to hand the car over to Shahin.

However it was during the mandatory stops that drama unfolded.

With a longer handicap stop time Shahin came back to the pack while sitting in the lane, which led to contact with Tony Bates’ Audi on release from his pit bay.

That means the car could be penalised for an unsafe release, that investigation ongoing.

Back out on track Shahin was able to run down the cars that got past during the stop, eventually passing Stephen Grove, who took over the Grove Porsche, to retake the lead on Lap 26.

He then drove to a 10 second win pending a penalty.

The Groves finished second ahead of the Triple Eight Mercedes driven by Feeney and Prince Jefri Ibrahim.

The fourth and final sprint round of the season takes place with the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships at Sandown on September 17-19.
